NERVOUS ANOREXIA (NA)
It is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, obsession with food, and an alteration in the perception of one’s own body. In the case of women, due to the significantly low weight, amenorrhea may appear (loss of menstruation). There is a desire to continue losing weight, even if it is below healthy weight by height.
In the case of restrictive NA, there is a restriction on food intake, and may be accompanied by an abuse of physical activity.
When we speak of purgative AN there are behavoirs aimed at purging in order to lower weight (auto vomit caused, incorrect use of laxatives, diuretics or enema).
BULIMIA NEVOSA (BN)
Bulimia nervosa is characterized by recurrent episodes of binge eating, and by great emotional instability. They feel a sense of lack of control over what they eat during the binge episode.
After the binge compensatory behaviors appear (vomiting, laxatives or diuretics in the purgative BN, fasting or restriction in the non-purgative BN).
There is an obsession to lose weight, although they do not show overweight.
They usually keep the symptom hidden, that means they can keep the food disorder hidden for a longer time.
BINGE EATING DISORDER
In binge eating disorder there are recurrent episodes of binge, but unlike bulimia, there are no associated compensatory behaviors.
They have a feeling of lack of control of what they eat during the binge episode and feel a great guilt about them.
The people who present it may have tried a lot of diets, and none of them have succeeded. Their use of food is associated with emotional conflicts.
EATING DISORDER NOT SPECIFIED (EDNOS)
It is an eating disorder that does not meet the criteria for diagnosing a specific eating disorder. Currently, they are the most frequent eating disorders. In these cases, difficulties can be complicated by the appearance of different psychopathological, behavioral, relational factors, etc …
